quotes from The Monuments Men

The Monuments Men

Their directive was simple, but the task was impossible.

Quotes:
Lt. Frank Stokes: While we must and will win this war, we should also remember the high price that’ll be paid if the very foundation of modern society is destroyed.

Lt. Frank Stokes: Mr. President, we are at a point in this war that is the most dangerous to the greatest historical achievements known to man.

Lt. Frank Stokes: The Nazi’s have been stealing art out of Warsaw, Amsterdam, Paris.

Lt. Frank Stokes: There’s a Michelangelo joke to be made.
Lt. James Granger: You’re just the man to make it.

Lt. Frank Stokes: I’m to put a team together and do our best to protect buildings, bridges, and art before the Nazi’s destroy everything.
Lt. James Granger: How many men?
Lt. Frank Stokes: Six.
Lt. James Granger: Jesus!
Lt. Frank Stokes: Well, with you it’s seven.
Lt. James Granger: That’s much better.

Lt. Frank Stokes: I’m to put a team together and try to protect what’s left and find what’s missing.
Lt. James Granger: The Monuments Men.
Lt. Frank Stokes: It’s signed by Roosevelt.
Lt. James Granger: How many men?
Lt. Frank Stokes: For now, six.
Lt. James Granger: Jesus!
Lt. Frank Stokes: Well, with you it’s seven.
Lt. James Granger: That’s much better.

Lt. James Granger: You want to go into a war zone with some architects and artists and tell our boys what they can and cannot blow up.
Lt. Frank Stokes: That’s right.
Lt. James Granger: Aren’t we a little old for that?
Lt. Frank Stokes: Yes.

Lt. Frank Stokes: You go through basics and then we wait for our orders.
Lt. James Granger: Basic? Basic training?
Lt. Frank Stokes: Mm.
Lt. James Granger: Oh, boy.

Lt. Donald Jeffries: Well, the chaps are all very anxious to get started. We have your architecture in Chicago, a sculptor, a director of design at the school of fine arts, and a few other experts in various fields of art.

Lt. Frank Stokes: We’ve been tasked with the finding and protecting of over five million pieces of stolen art work.

Lt. Donald Jeffries: This is a model of his planned F├╝hrer museum. It will be one of the biggest in the world.
Lt. James Granger: They need a lot of art to fill it.
Lt. Jean-Claude Clermont: This is why Hitler didn’t bomb Paris.
Lt. Donald Jeffries: Well, he bombed London.
Lt. Jean-Claude Clermont: Yes, I know.

Lt. Frank Stokes: If you destroy an entire generation of people’s culture, it’s as if they never existed. That’s what Hitler wants, and it’s the one thing we can’t allow.
Pvt. Preston Savitz: So we get to shoot some Nazi’s?

Lt. Donald Jeffries: If you would just read the orders.
Colonel Langton: I’ll tell you what these orders say, “don’t knock out old building.”
Lt. Frank Stokes: Colonel, the building…
Colonel Langton: Do not interrupt me, lieutenant!

Lt. Frank Stokes: We’re gonna start with a friend in Paris who’s gonna have some idea where the French art has been hidden.

Lt. Frank Stokes: The Nazi’s are on the run, they’ve everything with them, so we have to get as close to the front as we can.

Lt. James Granger: I’m interested in what you saw there.
Rose Valland: Thousand of pieces. They would photograph the arts and take it to Hitler.

Lt. James Granger: Look at this, it says if Hitler dies, or if Germany falls, they’re to destroy everything. Everything.

Lt. Frank Stokes: They tell us who cares about art, but they’re wrong. Which is the exact reason that we’re fighting. For our culture, for our way of life. Hitler wants everything.

Lt. Frank Stokes: You can wipe out an entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground, and somehow they’ll still find their way back. But if you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements and it’s as if they never existed. That’s what Hitler wants, that is exactly what we’re fighting for.

Lt. Frank Stokes: What have you got?
Lt. James Granger: Stop! Stop! I seem to have stepped on a land mine.
Lt. Frank Stokes: Why would you do somethin’ like that?
What have you got?
Lt. Frank Stokes: The lieutenant here seems to have found himself on top of an explosive mine.
Sgt. Walter Garfield: Why would you do that?
Lt. James Granger: You all have been spending too much time together.
